Week 88 Roosendaal Netherlands

Hey errybudy! We had a really good week this week.  We found a few new investigators, and they are super positive. The work is really turning around here in Roosendaal since I got here.  We are teaching a family called the de kortes, and another guy named deiroon.  We had first lessons with them this week and they both went really well!

We had a zone training as well, and I think it went good.  I had to teach about travel contacting, and it was a lot of fun.  After the training the office elders came to pick up elder Heinricks.  So we are down to two of us now.  Just me and elder Hosea are all alone.

On Saturday we went with a member to help clean the church, and right as we were leaving a guy from Utah showed up.  He served here 30 years ago, and he was here for work so he came to take a picture of the church, and he ran into us so he took us back to Roosendaal and took us out to lunch.  It was a lot of fun and super nice of him.  I didn´t have my camera with me or I would have taken a picture of us. sorry mom.

I called up Farley Jansen last week. If you remember who he is.  He’s the guy who got baptized in Almere, and he is preparing for the temple! It was super nice to be able to talk to him.  He is going to try and go through the temple before I go home, so me and elder Schmidt can go with him.  I am really excited for him.

Week 87 Roosendaal Netherlands

Cool church out in the middle of nowhere

The weird trees that everybody has over here

This is what we got for showing up to the knitting service thing

This last week was NL DOET.  It is a big two day thing where everyone here in Nederland is supposed to do some service.  We did it last year and it was a lot of fun, and this year the APs decided they would set up projects for all of the districts.  They signed us up for one and gave us the address, but when we showed up it was a big crochet and knitting party.  We didn't know how to do any of that stuff, so we just sat there and watched for like 20 minutes, and then the lady in charge started calling around to find another project for us. haha it was weird.  So she found one that was close by and we got to cut out bushed and stuff for an old folk’s home.  They are putting in one of those old people work out playgrounds.  It was fun, but the shovels in this country are terrible!! It's just a piece of crapy wood and a flat piece of metal.  One of the elders snapped his in half. haha so we had to be really careful.

We got a call this week from President Robinson, and elder Heinricks is going to the office! He gets to stay for our zone training on Thursday and then they are picking him up from there.  It will be sad to see him go, but elder Hosea and I are going to kill it here in Roosendaal!

Week 86 Roosendaal Netherlands

Message to Elder Carter / He is half way
Zoom in and read the scripture and message

A de lorian we saw on exchanges.. enjoy

This week was just full of contacting! We still haven´t been able to really meet any of the investigators.  None of them are very solid I guess, so we are just knocked doors.  We have given out a TON of book of Mormons! Its crazy!  With the new standard of 20 hrs of proselyting every week they are encouraging travel contacting, so we have been trying that lately and it´s hard! Like trying to talk to people on trains! It is illegal to preach to them so we have to just bug them enough until they ask us about ourselves, and then we can tell them about the church.  It´s been hard but pretty cool.  We have given out a few books, but we have also had a few really awkward situations.

One day this week we traveled to a little dorp to look up some referrals and while we were walking down the street we saw a couch hanging out of a window, and that isn't too uncommon over here because the stairs are so small whenever people move they do it all through the windows.  So anyway we could see that they were struggling so we asked if we could help and they didn´t really say much accept that it was stuck so me and elder Hosea lifted up elder Heinricks and he pushed from the bottom, and the wife started yelling at her husband, `schiet op! de jongens staan op elkaar!` she was like hurry up man they boys are standing on each other!! haha but we got the couch in the house! it was a really funny random service opportunity.

The sisters had a baptism yesterday for a guy named Joseph.  He is from Indonesia, and I got to do the baptism interview, so it was really cool to get to know him.  He has given up a lot to get baptized, and even his brother has given up drinking and smoking because of his influence on him. It was just really cool!

I love Roosendaal! The members are awesome, my companions are awesome! and we just have a lot of fun with the work here!

Week 85 Roosendaal Netherlands

A windmill on America street...

crazy womping willow like tree in the centrum

Pink Sunday! With the bishop! If you don't notice
we are all wearing pink

My first week in Roosendaal has been busy!  We travel a ton because most of the members live in Breda, and they feed us a lot so that is awesome!  I am serving in the same ward as sister Lemich! It is so weird to talk about cedar stuff with her.  We are with them a lot as well, and they have a baptism coming up this next week.

Roosendaal is kind of a smaller city, but it's cool.  We have an okay apartment.  It's not like the house I just came from but it is still pretty nice.  We live right above a store centrum so that is really nice for shopping.  There are a few Americans in our ward so a lot of people spoke English to us yesterday, and the bishop is African so he speaks English with us as well.  We have had 2 dinner appointments so far and they have both been in English.  It is weird.  I haven't had an appointment in English for a while, and it was nice!

I still haven't been able to meet our investigators here yet.  I've heard good things about them but all of the appointments were scheduled for this week, so hopefully I will have a better update for you for next week.

Week 84 Hengelo Netherlands Going to Roosendaal

Stake patriarchs collection of weapons!

Water with mint leaves in it

Elder Frisby and elder Thom caught me speaking English
during Taal Week (language week)

Not a whole lot happening in missionary work this week.  We had a zone conference, and a stake conference, so that was three days of missionary work gone.  The zone conference was great!! We got to watch a bunch of videos.  They showed all of the ones from people in our mission.  Like the one with me, and the other three in Belgium.  Then we got to watch meet the mormons.  It was super cool!

For the stake conference we had a guest speaker.  His name is elder price, and he is a 70 over the middle east.  He is retired from the FBI, and lives in Saudi Arabia.  For the priesthood session he had a lot of cool stories, and he had an elder duct tape his hands together, and then he got out of it.  haha it was cool to hear his stories, about the training they make him go through.

On my birthday we ate at the Brandenburgs, and they made me a super good birthday cake.  It was a pear cake.  It was seriously one of the best things I have ever eaten! That night at ward council when they asked the missionaries if they have anything to add, elder Thom told everyone that he had just eaten manna from heaven. haha It really was super good.  And because it was my birthday I got 2 pieces.  It was awesome!

So in other news I’m getting transferred!! We got the call last night, and I am going to Rosendaal.  I will be in a 3man with elder Heinricks and elder Hosea.  I am sad to leave Hengelo, but I am also excited to go to a new city.  I have 3 transfers left so I hope it will be my last city!

Week 83 Hengelo Netherlands

This week was awesome!! We found a new FAMILY of investigators! It is a Dutch family, and we had a lesson with them this week.  Edward is a doctor, and he is super smart and religious.  The first lesson went great! They are members of an evengelies gemeenschap church. Sorry I don't know what church it is in English.  But anyway they invited us to their church but it was at the same time as ours so we called president and he gave us permission to miss our own to go to theirs! It was super cool! They pretty much sang the whole time and it was like modern music! ha it was fun to experience.  But when we were walking back to the train station elder Frisby was like, "did we learn anything in there?" haha cuz all they do is sing and say praise the lord and stuff and no studying.

Yesterday evening was mikes baptism!!!  It was so great. His family came and some friends.  They all thought it was cool and his mom made treats for it too.  It was just an awesome experience.  Our whole district was there, so it was cool to be able to get us pumped up to do missionary work.  I will send some pictures of us with mike.

Week 82 Hengelo Netherlands

We spoiled ourselves and bought some pizza.
Enjoyed with a Dr Pepper from my pops!

The Sheet Bend!

Dear Family and Friends!

This past week was a really good week.  We taught mike twice and it went great.  We have two more lessons planned for this week to prepare him for his baptism on Sunday!!!! I am so excited! His family and friends will be there too so he asked if we could watch the restoration video while he is getting dressed. I will send yall pictures next week.

On Friday we had ward council and someone brought up our garbage issue. If you don't remember the city refuses to pick up our garbage because we are actually written in in Leiden and not in hengelo. They have some weird law here about that so they won’t pick up our garbage.  The ward tried to fix this problem like 4 months ago but they couldn’t get anything figured out, so we have just been carrying our recycling stuff to the Albert Heijn store and dumping it there but everything else has just been piling up in our back yard.  haha some of the relief society sisters were pretty upset and said they were going to make some calls!! haha so we will see if anything happens this time.

I was on exchanges with elder cutler this week.  We were companions on our 3rd transfer together so it was a nice little reunion!  He taught me how to tie all of the old boy scout knots that I have forgotten. haha I will send a picture.  It was a lot of fun working with him and then we had a FHE with the van benthems.  We played board games and it was just a lot of fun!

I love you all and hope you have a great week!

Week 81 Hengelo Netherlands

Not a whole lot happened this week.  I got sick Tuesday and was throwing up after district meeting. Sister Robinson said to take two days off and stay inside.  So we had a pretty chill week, and then elder Frisby got sick too, so we were inside most of the week.  We did have one exchange with the Deventer elders, and I got to work with elder Cluckey.  We had a few lessons that day, and one really cool thing that happened was with their investigator who said she didn't want to meet with them anymore.  We decided to read with her out of the book of Mormon and just try and talk her through her issues. haha it actually worked awesome, and the spirit was strong.  In the end of the lesson she said she still was shut off to the idea of a church telling her what to do but she doesn't want to lose the feelings she was feeling while we were there, and she said that she knows she is on the right path.  It was a super cool lesson!

We had another nerf war in the church last week, and another less active came! I will send a picture, and we are going to do it again today.  We are ordering pizza too so I'm pretty excited about that! Love you all! Have a great week!

Week 80 Hengelo Netherlands

Me and Elder Thom at our nerf war at the church

Br. Kabels clock making shop!

Hello everyone! This last week, was a good week! We had a zone training, and also a few days of service, so not a whole lot of door knocking done this week.  It snowed and rained all week as well, and the snow was great but the rain not so much.

We taught mike this week about prophets, and it went really well.  He Always asks a lot of questions, and the family that we teach with is Always good at adding things to what we teach.  Sister Brandenburg served a mission, and br brandenburg was a stake president, so they both know quite a bit about the gospel.  This is really how the lessons should Always be. It is so nice to have this much support from the members.

We had an exchange this week with the zone leaders.  I was with elder bean and I found out his dad was a professional golfer!! He played on the tour when he was in his 20s. He said that he was good enough to make it until Sunday but he never won, so his dad told him to get a real job! haha So elder Bean knows a lot about golf, so we talked about it the whole exchange! He is also going to play basketball for BYU when he gets back so he updated me a little on what’s going on in the NBA.  It has been a long time since I have talked to anyone about sports.  It seems like my whole mission, I have been serving with people who know nothing about sports our hunting.  So it was a nice break to be able to talk to someone about sports.

The work is going great here.  I love sharing the gospel with people every day.  No matter how hard it is, I love it out here, and I'm glad I am doing what I am doing. I love you all and hope you have a great week!

Week 79 Hengelo Netherlands

We found a new guy this week named Nour from Seria.  He speaks great English, and he was interested in the book of Mormon, so we set up a time to meet with him, and we taught him on Saturday night.  At the end of the appointment he was like, "by the way I liked your guyses Facebook page and I saw the video of you Elder Hulet." haha we hear stuff like that all the time. People see missionaries and say that they saw us on tv or on the internet so I was just like well that's cool! And he was like No really it was you! So he took us to the website and It was the video that the church made about a year ago back when I was in Almere.  It is the conversion story of a sister there, and they had me and elder Fowkes play the elders in it.  It was the first like I'm a Mormon video thing here.  The church made a new website just for Dutch, and they put this on it.  If you want to see the video it is also on the Facebook page.  It is called Mormonen Lage Landen.  Then it’s just under videos on that page.

Our Phone broke this week as well.  When elder Frisby stood up on the bus it fell out of his pocket and the screen broke.  So we called the office and we have to pay 60 euro to replace it. We were pretty upset about that until our new Phone arrived in the mail.  It is a Samsung Galaxy Y!! WE HAVE A SMART PHONE!!!  It is called the galaxy youth so I guess it's for like little kids but it's a whole lot better than the one we used to have.  It is super nice for missionary work!

We met with Mike a few times this week and we pushed the baptismal date back to February 21st.  He is still just progressing and loving it. I'm super excited for him.

It also snowed this week, and we had a little snowball fight with the Enschede elders. It was awesome!!

Week 78 Hengelo Netherlands

Me and Anja!

Lunch for sister support day

This week is transfers, and me and elder Frisby will both be staying here in Hengelo together.

Most of the district will be staying except elder kettler will be coming to Enschede, so he will be in our ward! He is in my MTC group, and he was my companion on my 3rd transfer. So I'm pretty excited about that!

This week we taught more lessons than last week, and it was really just a great week!  We had 2 lessons with Mike, and we set a baptismal date for January 31st!! We are super excited! I hope he will be ready by then.  We also just got a few new investigators, and our eternal investigator Anja wants to set a baptismal date for May!! We are so excited for her.  This week was just really a good week for missionary work.  It has been snowing and raining all week. They said it's not normal to be raining this much in the Netherlands! haha so if it's a lot of rain for this country then you know it's a ton!! We have these nice little heaters in our apartment so we can dry our stuff every night so it will be ready for the next day. Haha I'm glad we have those.

Elder Frisby lost his ov chip card and also shoes last week.  So he has been having to pay for his travel with his own money, and its been rough.  It makes you realize how blessed we are to have the church pay for our travel.  Without it we would be broke!!

I hope you all have a great week!

Week 77 Hengelo Netherlands

We spent a few days this week getting all of the referrals looked up that we had from the Facebook campaign.  A lot of cool things happened. We taught a few lessons, and that is a big deal in this part of the country!  Our district really is starting to pick things up, and it is so awesome! Everyone in the zone taught at least 1 lesson last week, and that is the first time in a long time!!

I had the opportunity to go on exchanges with the zone leaders this week and it was awesome! We had 4 appointments back to back, and 3 of them went through. I have never taught 3 lessons in one day before. I don't know how some of those other missions do it.  haha It was really nice, and I was telling a member about it on Sunday, and he was like you know why they are getting lessons? It's because the members are giving them people to teach, and it's true. That's where those people came from. So this member yesterday asked if he could have some more of our pass along cards because he said he is going to find someone for us to teach this week. It was super cool of him!

Yesterday after church the ward all went over to see the new church building that they just bought. It was my second time there, but this time the bishop lead us around and showed us all of the changes they were going to make on the building. They have a ton of extra space so they said they might have the elders move in to the upstairs part of it. It is actually perfect for a missionary apartment, but too bad I won't be here when they move into it. They are thinking it will be done in the summer sometime.

We taught mike again this week, and it went great. Most of the lesson was just answering questions, and then we finished up with the restoration.  It was a really powerful lesson. We are teaching him again tonight, and I'm excited for that.

Week 76 Hengelo Netherlands

1&2 Fireworks outside our house

1&2 Fireworks outside our house

Julio! ha He is a stud! I didn't have enough time to get a picture
with him because we had to catch a train.

This last week was a lot of fun.  We had to be in for new year’s eve at 4:00 because of all the fireworks.  A member brought us a bunch of food so we could have our own little feast at our house.  The fireworks were CRAZY!!! I will send some pictures but they don't do it justice.

Anyway... on Saturday we had a lesson with Meik.  He is the boyfriend of a member and we are teaching him.  He has no religious background, and we have already taught the first 2 lessons.  We decided to start over and take it slower for him because it is a lot of info for someone who doesn't even know anything about the bible.  The lesson went great! We had it at the Brandenburgs house and they had a lot of great input. Meik was also in church on Sunday. He is super cool. We are hoping to set a baptismal date next lesson.

Later that day me and elder Rasmusen headed up to Groningen for the baptism of Julio! I don't know if you guys remember but I taught him back when I was in Groningen, and he was waiting  to get baptized until his wife came back from Cape Verde (shout out to Elder Jarvis).  She is back now and we got permission from president to go because me and elder Rasmusen have both taught him.  A few of the members recognized me so that made me happy!! I was there like 8 months ago and only for one transfer, so it was so nice to be able to go back.

Seeing a baptism from someone you know is the greatest experience on a mission.
